Designing and Gardening Tips

Fall is coming to a close, winter weather is upon us and O'Donal's is ready for the holiday season. Our nursery stock that remains is asleep under covers starting the end of November and the nursery is alive with lots of greens and berries to decorate with during this dormant season. Although dormant, the landscape offers some beautifully subtle appeal and color that Mainers can appreciate:

  • Birch Trees' bark
  • Red-Twig and Yellow-Twig Dogwood
  • Willow Trees
  • Pussy Willows
  • Blueberry branches
  • Ornamental Grasses
  • Stewartia's freckled bark
  • pealing bark of Seven-Son-Flower
  • freckled Japanese Lilac Tree w/ passed blossoms
  • and PeeGee Hydrangeas' passed blossoms

These are deciduous plants that can appeal to winter landscape interests. Also, golden or light green of evergreen foliage is a lovely contrast to the dark greens, grays, browns and whites of winter landscapes. These details are considered part of Four Season Landscaping. So, take a moment to look out at your property with the native plants and the newly planted plants. Do they provide you with any texture and color interest during the winter months? Stonewalls, new and old, and other hardscape elements play a significant role in our dormant landscape, especially with the variety of colors stone can have, purples, blues, grays, greens and white.

This is the time of year to review or begin to learn about your property's landscape. Are you pleased with what you see where you spend your time outside on your property? Do you want to add a fire-pit, a patio, a deck, an edible garden, a bird sanctuary, a buffer or transition border to your woods or field etc.? Perhaps, you have an existing perennial garden, a shrub border or a foundation garden that has gotten ahead of you. We can help you manage it by starting off with a consultation at your home. Our landscape designer can affordably help you gain the integrity (back) to your home landscape if it is out of hand. If you have a blank slate, the Landscape Designer will work with you to create the landscape that reflects you. A consultation will provide you with a sketch and written recommendations. If you feel you still want more details with a conclusive plant selection and outlining elements that would create a finished design product, our designer can do that too.

For more information, check out our brochure and call our Landscape Designer at 839-4262. We also have some pictures on the website of some our designs installed by a variety of qualified landscapers who we refer our customers to.
